Unlike the Texans and Jets, the Browns selected a player in the 2006 NFL draft that Cleveland fans already love. Will character supercede talent in this case?

Is it possible? During the NFL 2006 draft, did the league get a good guy? I'm not talking about a talented football player; I'm talking about a legitimate, solid character guy.

Imagine the NFL, a league filled with more questionable characters than many prisons, actually getting a guy that says he wants to be a good community man.

This aberration is Kamerion Wimbley, the 13th player taken in the 2006 NFL draft, selected by the Cleveland Browns.

Wimbley, a defensive end from Florida State, who will play linebacker for Cleveland, told WKNR radio that he is looking forward to being a role model. "I want to be a good character off the field as well as on," Wimbley said in an interview on Sunday. "I want to get into the community and help kids. Cleveland is the place I wanted to be."

In a time when most news about NFL players off the field is centered around something negative, it's refreshing to hear a young man say he wants to be a good guy and a community servant. He wants to be a role model.

Remember Charles Barkley? "I'm not a role model," the Round Mound of Rebound said, years ago.

Now, it may be true that athletes are not cut out to be role models, but since kids look up to professional players, it would certainly be nice if they could at least behave like solid citizens and not felons.

The NFL needs more guys like Kamerion Wimbley. There's too much Randy Moss showing his back side to the fans, Ray Lewis riding around with murderers, and Terrell Owens ranting and raving about how he is so much bigger than the game.

Kids are going to look up to athletes, whether they should or not. So, it's time for the pro players to realize that they are under scrutiny.

If a young man like Kamerion Wimbley, who hasn't even strapped on a helmet yet, can commit to being a solid role model and community member, it shouldn't be that tough for veterans like the aforementioned Moss and company to follow suit.

Kamerion Wimbley may have gone to football hell on Sunday, but he definitely is a heavenly addition to the NFL.
